Custom Sports Mouthguards

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that a custom-fitted mouthguard is worn while playing sports that involve a risk of injury to the mouth. Impacts from balls, sports equipment, other players or falling over can cause trauma or damage to the teeth and jaws – including chipped, cracked and knocked-out teeth, cuts inside the mouth or broken jaws. Wearing a mouthguard helps to reduce the severity of a collision and can help you avoid needing an emergency dentist.

HITIQ Smart Mouthguards – Exclusive to Bupa Dental Care Dentists

HITIQ have combined head impact surveillance with a custom-fit mouthguard for better protection on the sports field.

It’s designed to provide you with data to help protect players 12 years and over from the effects of head impacts during contact sports.

Sensors within the HITIQ mouthguard detect head impacts, which are collated and assessed. After game play, alerts are sent to your HITIQ app, alerting you to head impacts detected by the mouthguard. Book your consult with Kelmscott Dental today!

HITIQ What you get

Night Splints for Bruxism and TMJ Disorder

Bruxism is a common condition that is often triggered by stress and other lifestyle factors. If you’re grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw during the day or night, it could be a sign of bruxism. If left untreated, it can develop into  temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD).

Wearing a night splint helps to protect your teeth from chipping, fracturing, loosening or being worn down. It can also help to relieve pressure on the jaw joints.

Oral Appliances for OSA

OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) is a common chronic sleep disorder that causes the airway to temporarily block and interrupts your normal breathing. It can be caused by factors including:

  • Nasal obstruction
  • Large tonsils
  • Smoking
  • Excessive drinking
  • Obesity

Wearing an oral appliance can help to alleviate symptoms of mild to moderate OSA. It works by bringing the lower jaw forward and opening the airway to avoid obstruction and vibration (snoring).

Caring for Your Mouthguard

  • Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat
  • Wash it using cold water after use
  • Store on its mould to retain its shape
  • Bring your mouthguard to your regular dental check-ups so we can check its condition

Custom mouthguards for children and teens may need to be changed every year or more frequently as their teeth and bite change, however adult mouthguards can last for several years with good care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a mouthguard cost?

A custom mouthguard costs more than an over-the-counter mouthguard, but by offering more protection it lowers the risk of needing expensive corrective treatments. The average cost of a custom-fitted sports mouthguard is approximately $200. Some health funds that include dental services cover the cost of mouthguards with no out of pocket expenses. Check with your insurance provider to find out if you’re covered. Kelmscott Dental is a Bupa Platinum Members First provider and a preferred provider for HBF and HCF. We can also offer flexible payment options if you need help breaking down your mouthguard cost to make it easier to manage.

Why is a custom mouthguard superior to other mouthguards?

If you’re used to wearing a mouthguard bought from a store, you might associate mouthguards with feeling uncomfortable or even affecting your speech or breathing. While any mouthguard is better than no protection at all, a mouthguard that’s been custom made to fit over your teeth precisely offers more reliable protection than a generic or boil-and-bite mouthguard. It should also be less bulky, feel more comfortable and have less impact on your speech, breathing and athletic performance. A custom mouthguard is also recommended during  orthodontic treatment or if you have protruding teeth.
